here's a poem i wrote for my girlfriend... i love her a lot!!
O Venus, sick mistress that you are,
How you drown the fires of my heart in subterfuge and contempt
Such so that love lies dormant for the eternities, the eternities
Between the brilliant shining lights of kisses from my beloved.
My love for her is a bastard flower
Baked to stone in purest flame
Illegitimate by way of distance
Yet immortal by way of intensity
And I know I cannot have it any other way.
Venus, Venus! You curse me so;
Curse us both, and for what?
Lovers once intertwined
Can only be separated upon fracture of the mortal coil.
My heart beats for her—
for love!—
And it will not remain silent.
Venus! Ye blasted gamemaster!
Challenge us you may, but
You shall not have your way!
Hope! Hope! Hope and love
Drive my heart now
And they shall not be stifled.
currently sitting in a pancake house somewhere in illinois — calumet city, approximately. power's been out for at least 12, maybe 18 at this point, hours. i'm charging my phone off of the plugs they use for a walkie-talkie station.
i wouldn't call myself some kind of refugee, but there's a level of hospitality that i wouldn't have expected, i guess. it's a simple thing, being able to charge your phone. but it's good to have.
the weather's only going to get worse over time. maybe one day i will end up a refugee.
when i heard my mom speaking spanish to the little waiter guy, i thought back to earlier in the summer, when the canadian smoke blanketed the sky and blotted out the sun. i recall hearing something — hearsay, hearsay — about some republican or other blaming the canadians for it. rather than offering our own hospitality, he rejected any notion of compassion. it's sad, really, that people can be so small.
i need to work on my spanish.
